Bush Twins
Since you stuffy liberal types like to read this blog, I thought I'd explain some of the jokes from the Bush daughters’ speech at the RNC.
JENNA BUSH: Gammie, we love you dearly, but you're just not very hip. She thinks "Sex and the City" is something married people do, but never talk about.
Translation: "Sex and the City" was a popular television show on the Home Box Office cable station that featured young women fornicating outside of holy matrimony. Old people are not hip enough to watch such programs, and in fact many of them believe that sexual relations should be confined between married heterosexual couples, and that such relations are not suitable for discussion in the public sphere.
BARBARA BUSH: Jenna and I are really not very political, but we love our dad too much to stand back and watch from the sidelines. We realized that this would be his last campaign, and we wanted to be a part of it. Besides, since we've graduated from college, we're looking around for something to do for the next few years. Kind of like dad.
Translation: Their dad was irresponsible and immature following his time at college. Kind of like those crazy girls! They’re always involved in some kind of light hearted mischief! They’ll be fine once they are born again in Christ.
JENNA: Our parents have always encouraged us to be independent and dream big. We've spent a lot of time at the White House, so when we showed up the first day, we thought we had it all figured out. But apparently my dad already has a chief of staff, named Andy.
Translation: The young bush daughters, upon arrival at the Whitehouse, thought that perhaps one or both of them could obtain employment as their father’s chief of staff. But the president already has a chief of staff, his name is Andrew Card.
BARBARA: Take this. I know it's hard to believe, but our parents' favorite term of endearment for each other is actually Bushy. And we had a hamster, too. Let's just say ours didn't make it.
Translation: The President and Mrs. Bush have a pet name for each other, and it is a silly variation on their last name. How embarrassing! No wonder the hamster didn’t make it!
